Senior Software Engineer

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) manages the efficient flow of electricity on more than 11,000 circuit-miles of high-voltage transmission lines, dispatching power from hundreds of generating units across the state.

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) applies cutting-edge technology to operating a reliable electricity system, managing competitive markets for wholesale electricity, and planning for the Empire State's energy future. The NYISO’s Information Technology department invites applications for a full-time Senior Software Engineer to join the Reliability Technologies team.

The Senior Software Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of software products. A Senior Software Engineer performs full stack development, including front end, back end, and database work where appropriate. The position will participate in all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle, research new technologies, mentor other developers, collaborate with Project Managers and act as a Subject Matter Expert for assigned applications. A Senior Software Engineer will participate in a 24x7x365 on-call support rotation for production applications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Apply technical knowledge and experience to solve architecture and design problems.
• Translate high-level business requirements into detailed application requirements.
• Create software design specifications and ensure compliance with development standards and architectural guidelines.
• Evaluate and incorporate approved technologies and tools.
• Present technology designs to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Document product architecture plans.
• Design and develop technical testing methods and tune applications for scalability and performance.
• Lead projects and mentor Associate Engineers and Engineers.
• Serve as a subject matter expert across the organization.
• Support all phases of the software development lifecycle, including requirements, design, development, testing, deployment, and post-production support.
• Provide task estimates, work breakdown structures, project status advice, and resource allocation tracking.
• Create or refactor software programs according to approved specifications and designs.
• Create automated unit and functional tests.
• Provide post-production application support, including problem identification, data analysis, emergency repairs, and customer inquiries.
• Provide 24x7x365 coverage for mission-critical systems.
• Develop user interfaces for web-based applications and review mockups.
• Apply web application security best practices and address security issues.
• Participate in penetration testing and create mitigation plans.
• Collaborate with third-party vendors and support application deployments.
• Follow source code management guidelines and collaborate during code deployments.
• Own application code, lead code reviews, and improve performance, security, maintainability, and standards compliance.
• Design and update database tables, SQL, and PL/SQL statements.
• Tune database tables and queries.
• Collaborate with Software Engineering, IT, and Project Management teams.
• Perform data profiling to support application performance and database capacity planning.
• Create and update technology and usability roadmaps.
• Participate in continuous learning.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Information Systems required.
• Seven years performing software development in a multi-dimensional team setting.
• Energy or utility industry experience desired.
• Experience with cloud development platforms, AWS, Docker, and Kubernetes desired.
• Java, JavaScript, and SQL experience required.
• Oracle PL/SQL experience desired.
• Experience leveraging AI-assisted software development tools to improve productivity, code quality, and delivery efficiency.
• Knowledge of AI-generated code review and validation practices desired.
• Ability to identify, evaluate, and implement AI and automation opportunities.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

• SANS Security Awareness training or equivalent desired.
• GIAC Secure Software Programmer – Java certification desired.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to interpret scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents; respond to inquiries; write technical documentation; and present information to management and public groups.
• Ability to comprehend and apply advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory.
• Ability to apply logical and scientific thinking to complex intellectual and practical problems.
• Intermediate competency with Windows, MS Office applications, email, and Internet programs.

The noise level is usually moderate. Contact with staff and the public will occur. Travel may be required for meetings, conferences, and training. This position may require work on nights, weekends, or holidays.

This role requires onsite work from the Rensselaer, NY location several days per workweek, with the option to work remotely on the remaining days. The employee may be required to increase onsite attendance based on business needs.
