Sr/Staff Software Engineer, Backend | Web Products

The Role

Set technical direction for backend development and design and build scalable, reliable web application systems while working alongside AI coding agents. Direct and review their output while maintaining a high quality bar. Apply strong experience in application design and system architecture, and drive adoption of new languages, tools, and agentic development practices across the team.

What You’ll Do

• Deepen your understanding of the healthcare claims and payments domain
• Build production-grade services using Java, Scala, and/or Rust; contribute to standards, mentor others, and elevate programming maturity
• Serve as the backend voice in cross-team planning and support cross-functional execution
• Contribute to complex in-browser applications that are extensible, scalable, and secure
• Balance customer-facing features with technical debt cleanup
• Architect and implement applications applying machine learning techniques to large volumes of data
• Design systems that work together to deliver a well-performing, reliable application
• Bring agentic engineering practices into the team's day-to-day work and help the team adopt them effectively

What You Bring

• 10+ years of experience across backend programming; additional full-stack experience highly desired
• Experience designing and shipping customer-facing web application products
• Meaningful experience with Java or Scala; Rust highly desired
• Experience designing, building, and operating distributed systems on cloud services at scale
• Ability to write technical design documents that translate ambiguous product intent into concrete backend design
• Product- and user-driven mindset
• Strong cross-functional collaboration skills with engineering, product, machine learning, data science, and leadership partners
• Pragmatic approach with strong systems thinking and focus on root causes
• Hands-on experience with agentic engineering tools and workflows in production
• Experience reading and understanding complex code, owning code quality, and improving it
• Critical thinking and problem-solving skills in a high-growth environment
• Comfort with complexity and curiosity to define the path forward
• Technical leadership on Rust best practices, idioms, safety, and performance is a plus
• BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent experience

Our interview process evaluates candidates across our engineering career ladder. The level, title, and compensation range are determined by overall performance and demonstrated competencies. Salary depends on factors including years and depth of experience, skills, and certifications. The total compensation package includes meaningful equity, healthcare, flexible time off, and other benefits and perks.

Pay Range: $200,000-250,000
