About the role
The Opportunity:
Ginkgo Datapoints defines the category of the Bio × AI data provider. We work with top pharma, biotech, tech, and techbio companies, and we've built our reputation on high-quality, large-scale, reproducible data generated by automation rather than by hand. We're a fee-for-service partner — our customers own their data, and our incentives are aligned with theirs.
As our Senior Director of Multiomics, you will own the vision, execution, and commercial success of our Multiomics business, including the functional genomics engine behind our Perturbation Response Profiling and Specialized HTS offerings. You will operate at the frontier of business and science, report to the GM of Datapoints, and lead a multidisciplinary team of scientists, automation engineers, and bioinformaticians.
Your Mission:
Your primary goal is to scale our arrayed multiomic perturbation platform into the best in the industry and own the full P&L for the vertical:
- Find new applications for DRUG-seq, especially safety and predictive toxicology.
- Position perturbation datasets as training substrates for AI/ML models.
- Extend readouts into proteomics, metabolomics, and additional NGS methods.
- Build new products, including arrayed whole-genome CRISPR knockouts paired with rich multiomic readouts.
The role is anchored in discovery-stage functional genomics, with room to extend multiomic work into translational and clinical biomarkers in population-scale and direct-to-consumer settings.
Key Responsibilities:
- Define the go-to-market strategy for Multiomics Datapoints, identify market gaps, set pricing, and own revenue growth and operational efficiency.
- Set the scientific direction across arrayed perturbation platforms and multiomic readouts, including DRUG-seq, high-content imaging, Cell Painting, CRISPR-edit verification, CRISPR KO, CRISPRi, siRNA, and ASO modalities.
- Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of approximately 10–15 scientists, automation engineers, and bioinformaticians.
- Bridge industrialized wetlab automation with computational and AI interpretation.
- Represent Ginkgo's Multiomics business at conferences, publish and present science, cultivate scientific communities, and support sales and business development.
- Partner with Government Affairs to shape and win large-scale ARPA-H, BARDA, DARPA, and NIH programs.
- Scale the automated arrayed perturbation-and-readout platform with integrated quality control and AI analytics pipelines.
The Profile:
We need a functional genomics leader with deep scientific intuition and a builder's ambition for scale, who is comfortable in customer conversations and data reviews. Ideally, you have been an active buyer of discovery, CRO, or data-generation services and want to build an offering from the sell side.
Required Qualifications:
- 10+ years in high-growth biotech or large pharma with a proven track record in functional genomics and discovery research.
- Experience buying discovery, CRO, or data-generation services, or leading teams that did so.
- PhD or equivalent experience in genomics, molecular biology, computational biology, systems biology, or a related field.
- Recognized expertise in perturbation biology or modeling and the discovery cascade.
- Direct experience with arrayed chemical or genetic screening, transcriptomic profiling, and high-content imaging.
- Strong computational skills and a practical understanding of wetlab methods, including assay development, cell culture, and perturbation delivery.
- Interest in commercial ownership, including pricing, growth, and translating technical capability into customer value.
- Entrepreneurial mindset and comfort in fast-paced, high-stakes environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with translational or clinical biomarkers in population-scale or direct-to-consumer settings.
- Expertise in proteomics, metabolomics, or additional NGS methods.
- Experience using perturbation data to train AI/ML models or familiarity with industrialized laboratory automation.
- Track record of contributing to commercial growth through scientific credibility, partnerships, or professional networks.
- Experience shaping or winning government or consortium grants.
- Established presence in the multiomics community through publications, speaking engagements, or advisory roles.
Why Ginkgo Datapoints?
Ginkgo has invested over $1 billion in automation infrastructure and operates advanced automated labs, making that capability available through Datapoints. This role will help shape how the next generation of biology gets discovered.
