About the role

What We Do

Driving the plug-in power behind Unreal Engine 5. We bridge connections for licensees and our own internal game teams to online services. This allows games like Fortnite to utilize a combination of platform online services as well as Epic’s own online services to build cross-platform online features. Login, parties, voice chat, matchmaking, purchasing, cloud storage, and analytics are just a few examples of online features that our Online Game Services team helps games utilize.

What You'll Do

We are looking for a Backend Engineer Intern to join us to continue to build the system that powers Fortnite. You'll work on the team responsible for things like running FNCS tournaments, storing player cosmetics and Sprites, and persisting LEGO Fortnite worlds. You will be given a feature to own as part of our development cycle, and be integrated in the day-to-day of the team.

In this role, you will

  • Contribute to the backend systems that power Fortnite experiences
  • Learn about security, scalability, and maintainability in the code you write
  • Collaborate with a team of highly experienced engineers
  • Work with Fortnite product owners and producers to figure out solutions that empower the upcoming seasons of Fortnite

What we're looking for

  • Proficiency in Java or similar object-oriented programming language
  • Experience with AI-assisted coding tools, such as Claude code
  • Ability to communicate effectively and provide task updates in a remote-first team environment
  • Willingness to ask questions, seek guidance, and learn from feedback
  • Foundational analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Familiarity with cloud technologies, particularly AWS, is preferred
  • Familiarity with *nix based systems is a plus
