About the role
About Us
At Antares, our mission is to make clean energy abundant from Earth to the Asteroid Belt by building mass-producible, inherently safe, deployable microreactors for terrestrial, underwater, and space applications.
About the Role
Own the plant’s high-power electrical architecture, including the common DC bus connecting battery energy storage, the reactor power conversion system, and the grid-tied inverter through DC/DC converters. Define architecture, performance and fault-handling requirements, supplier strategy, validation plans, and the roadmap for power and deployment scaling.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Own the common DC bus architecture, including voltage levels, topology, sectionalizing, protection, coordination, grounding, isolation, and sizing margins.
- Define expansion architecture for multi-reactor plants, including paralleling, fault isolation, protection selectivity, control hierarchy, and staged design decisions.
- Integrate high-voltage components from different vendors and verify system stability across reactor use cases.
- Own HV system functions including battery management, precharge, isolation monitoring, power quality, grid-forming and grid-following operation, shutdown, load shed, black start, and failover communications.
- Define and verify fault behavior for load rejection, short circuits, isolation and ground faults, and converter faults.
- Build and operate the high-power distribution test system, coordinating facilities, testing, instrumentation, data logging, and automation.
- Run test campaigns, correlate models, and convert results into architecture and supplier decisions.
- Own power electronics supplier relationships covering specifications, evaluation, design reviews, integration, escalation, and long-term management.
- Drive the electrical development roadmap and build-versus-buy and technology-selection decisions.
- Shape equipment pad layouts for voltage drop, inductance, EMI, thermal management, serviceability, and arc-flash safety.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in power electronics or high-power electrical systems, including system architecture ownership through hardware bring-up.
- Direct experience with DC bus architectures, protection, coordination, grounding, isolation, and fault-current analysis.
- Hands-on experience with grid-tied inverters, DC/DC conversion, and battery energy storage integration.
- Experience with motor-drive or generator-inverter systems and comparable high-power inverter applications.
- Product-level EMI/EMC testing experience.
- Experience specifying, evaluating, and managing power-electronics suppliers.
- Experience planning and executing high-power electrical test campaigns involving energized high-voltage systems.
- Working knowledge of applicable electrical codes and standards, including NEC Articles 706 and 705, NFPA 70E, NFPA 855, UL 1741, UL 1973, UL 9540, IEEE 519, IEEE 1547, and IEC 62477.
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Grid-forming control strategies, including droop control, virtual synchronous machines, and hardware black-start demonstrations.
- Familiarity with IEEE 2800 and inverter-based-resource interconnection requirements.
- Experience scaling power architectures across paralleled units or multi-unit sites.
- System modeling and studies using PLECS, PSCAD, Simulink/Simscape, ETAP, SKM, or EasyPower.
- EMI/EMC design for high-dv/dt power electronics.
- Experience delivering equipment under NQA-1, 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, AS9100, IEC 61508, or another formal quality program.
- Experience building test infrastructure, coordinating facility service upgrades, and implementing automated data acquisition.
- High-power experience in utility-scale energy storage, marine, traction, or aerospace electrification.
