About the role
About the Role
Own hardware associated with nuclear power systems in space and on the surface of the Moon and Mars. Serve as the Responsible Engineer, taking hardware from clean-sheet design through build, development testing, qualification, and integration. Own the hardware lifecycle, system interfaces, sourcing, testing, design improvements, system layout, packaging, CAD design, system analysis, design reviews, thermal and mechanical interfaces, requirements decomposition, manufacturability, and scalability.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Own a subsystem and related hardware as part of the larger space nuclear system.
- Drive system-level layout, requirements definition and decomposition, build and test cycles, design decisions, and concept development through CDR and beyond.
- Own CAD models, manage configurations, produce drawings, and perform DFMEA.
- Drive cross-discipline alignment and trade studies.
- Coordinate with nuclear, thermal, structures, manufacturing, and quality teams.
- Develop clean-sheet designs through hardware procurement and development and qualification testing.
- Support design reviews and integration and test planning, define manufacturing plans, and generate work instructions.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering, or a related physics-based field.
- 3+ years of experience in space system or product mechanical design, system configuration, and layout.
- Expertise with CAD such as NX or CATIA and experience with PLM and manufacturing planning and management systems.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- Master’s or PhD in mechanical or aerospace engineering, or a related physics-based field.
- Experience designing, analyzing, and integrating nuclear or space nuclear systems.
- Leadership experience on a project or research team.
- Strong project management, cross-discipline communication, interpersonal, and collaborative skills.
- Exceptional communication skills.
- Understanding of fluid systems and solid mechanics.
- Demonstrated initiative and high-impact contributions.
- Knowledge of materials science and material selection, especially for nuclear applications.
- Ability to conduct complex design trades, system sizing, and first-order engineering analyses while identifying limitations and risks.
- Strong design skills and GD&T and drawing experience, including taking designs into production.
Additional Requirements:
- Ability to work long hours and weekends as necessary to support critical milestones.
- Willingness and ability to obtain and retain a security clearance.
