About the role
About the Role:
As a Level I or Level II Mechanical Design Engineer in the Mission Engineering team, you will support hardware design and development associated with nuclear power systems in space and on the surface of the Moon and Mars. You will support team members, own development tests and component design, and be responsible for your product or deliverable, system interfaces, sourcing, building, testing, and design improvements. Responsibilities include CAD design, system analysis, design reviews, thermal and mechanical interface definition, requirements ownership and decomposition, and manufacturability and scalability.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Own hardware or deliverable-related hardware as part of the larger space nuclear system.
- Drive requirements definition and decomposition, build and test cycles, design decisions, and concepts through CDR and onward.
- Own CAD models, manage configurations, and produce drawings and DFMEA.
- Support development testing, test setup, test definition, and test documentation.
- Coordinate with nuclear, thermal, structures, manufacturing, and quality teams.
- Develop clean-sheet designs through hardware procurement and development and qualification testing.
- Support design reviews and integration and test planning; define manufacturing plans and work instructions.
- Support tooling, ground support equipment, facility upgrades, and emerging process documentation.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering or a related physics-based field.
- 1-3+ years of experience in space system or product mechanical design, system configuration, and layout.
- Expertise with CAD such as NX or CATIA and experience with PLM and manufacturing planning and management systems.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- Master’s or PhD in mechanical or aerospace engineering or a related physics-based field.
- Experience designing, analyzing, and integrating space hardware.
- Leadership experience on a project or research team.
- Strong project management, cross-discipline communication, interpersonal, and collaborative skills.
- Understanding of fluid systems, solid mechanics, and heat transfer.
- Knowledge of materials science, material selection, and material compatibility.
- Ability to conduct system sizing and first-order engineering analyses.
- Mechanical design and GD&T and drawings experience, including taking a design into production.
Additional Requirements:
- Ability to work long hours and weekends as necessary to support critical milestones.
- Ability and willingness to work on-site full time.
