About the California Virtual Academies and the High School Teacher Positions:

The California Virtual Academies deliver online, home-based instruction to students in grades TK-12 in California. Teachers provide live instruction through the Engageli platform. Students log into the online school daily, complete coursework, and attend instructional sessions.

High school teachers carry content and homeroom student caseloads. They provide standards-based instruction, coursework support, individual support, feedback, and grading. Teachers monitor attendance, progress, and engagement; provide interventions; communicate with learning coaches and families; and participate in conferences, virtual meetings, professional learning communities, data conferencing, professional development, in-person events, and state testing.

Hours and Salary Information:

Full-time teachers work Monday-Friday from 8:30am-4:00pm and may not have another job during contracted hours. Annual salary is based on holding a Bachelor's or Master's degree and up to 3 years of experience in California. CalSTRS participation is available. Full-time employees are offered health, dental, and vision benefits. Training and staff support are provided.

Required Credential/Certification:

  • Must currently reside in one of the 42 California counties served.
  • Valid, current Preliminary, Clear, or Life California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Science: Chemistry.
  • California English Learner Authorization issued by CTC.

Temporary county certificates, out-of-state, intern, expired, emergency, short-term staff permits, and credentials in the process of being obtained are not accepted.

Overview:

Virtual school teachers provide course content in an online environment and support the school's mission of using technology to educate students.

Summary:

Virtual high school teachers ensure students achieve mastery of learning objectives. They provide guidance, instruction, and support; manage the learning process; and focus on individual student needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Orient students to courses and communicate course and school requirements.
  • Support homeroom students with school information, schedules, attendance, and progress.
  • Provide small-group and direct instruction.
  • Participate in instructional coaching and develop instruction to address coaching goals.
  • Augment course content through remediation, modification, and enrichment.
  • Implement students' IEPs and attend IEP conferences as needed.
  • Set deadlines, grant extensions when appropriate, and grade student work within three days.
  • Conduct in-person or online meetings with students and teaching adults.
  • Document family communications according to school policies.
  • Review student data with regional lead teachers or curriculum specialists and provide remediation.
  • Follow school policies.
  • Proctor state and school-required assessments, assign students to test sites, arrange makeup testing, assist site coordinators, resolve testing issues, and organize testing materials.
  • Complete student progress reports and report cards.
  • Hold quarterly parent-teacher conferences and check-in calls.
  • Communicate with students, parents, teachers, support staff, and administrators by phone, email, and online or in-person meetings.
  • Collaborate with instructional teachers and support teams.
  • Organize orientations, training, social activities, educational activities, school outings, college tours, and other events.
  • Travel within assigned geographic areas for student support, meetings, testing, orientations, and school activities.
  • Attend all scheduled in-person meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities:

Teachers help plan and deliver parent orientations, contact assigned families, attend events, and follow up with families. They also participate in High School Hangouts, graduation, outings, and other in-person student and family events.

Requirements/Experience:

  • Reside in California.
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Strong content and subject-matter knowledge.
  • Ability to support and guide adults and students.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Organization and time-management skills.
  • Excellent writing and grammar skills.
  • Flexible schedule.
  • Professional proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Valid California Single Subject Teaching Credential with Science: Chemistry subject authorization.
  • California English Learner Authorization.

Assignment of Students:

Students are assigned according to geographic location, grade level, and other variables. Full-time classes are filled before assigning students to part-time teachers. Students from the same family may be assigned to one teacher when appropriate.

Competencies:

Business ethics, communication, leadership, people management, planning and organization, quality management, team leadership, technology use, and computer skills are required. Computer skills include Microsoft Office Suite, student information systems or database software, and moderating web meetings using platforms such as Blackboard Collaborate, Webinar, and Webex.

Work Environment:

This is a virtual position working from a home office. The teacher must travel during the school year within assigned geographic areas for student support, meetings, state exams, orientations, and school activities. A flexible schedule is required.

Physical Demands:

The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 15 pounds. The role frequently requires sitting and occasionally requires standing, walking, using hands, reaching, and talking or hearing.

Restrictions on Time Off:

Time-off restrictions are determined by the school calendar. Sick time may be approved under the California Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014.
