About the role

Akur8 is a fast-growing InsurTech scale-up redefining insurance pricing and reserving through transparent, high-performance modeling technology. Its SaaS platform uses transparent machine learning and predictive analytics to improve the speed, accuracy, and reliability of actuarial pricing and reserving.

The Pricing Actuary will influence the use of advanced machine learning technology in insurance and contribute to the product roadmap. The role interacts with Sales, Product, R&D, Marketing, Engineering, and Leadership, serving as a subject matter expert and translator between these departments and the language of insurance, actuaries, and clients. External stakeholders include Heads of Pricing, Heads of Product, CTOs, Actuaries, and Data Scientists.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead proof of concepts with potential clients and communicate complex actuarial concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Identify creative approaches to use Akur8 features for traditional and ad hoc actuarial questions.
  • Diagnose misalignments between clients’ use of the software and its underlying assumptions.
  • Identify beneficial product features and offerings and work with the product team to define problems and evaluate solutions.
  • Contribute to white papers and present at conferences or webinars.
  • Travel approximately 5 working days per month for team-building trips, industry conferences, and onsite client meetings.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in a P&C or general insurance pricing role as a Pricing Actuary, Actuarial Consultant, or equivalent; commercial and specialty lines experience is advantageous.
  • Broad insurance industry knowledge, including ISO products and ISO ERC.
  • Experience recommending and filing rates, developing rate indications, applying measurement methods and state-specific adjustments, and introducing or updating rating variables and factors.
  • Experience across the rate filing and approval lifecycle, including responding to objections from state Departments of Insurance.
  • Hands-on experience in actuarial ratemaking and rate deployment within a P&C or general insurance pricing environment.
  • Ability to understand insurance business imperatives and translate them into practical, software-driven solutions.
  • Ability to understand prospects’ and clients’ ratemaking processes, identify requirements, and map them to Akur8 platform functionality.
  • Ability to present ratemaking analyses and recommendations clearly to stakeholders with varying levels of technical expertise.
  • Basic understanding of Data Science and Machine Learning techniques for predictive modeling. Coding is not required; familiarity with Python or R is a strength.
  • Willingness and ability to travel approximately one week per month.
  • Native or near-native fluency in English.

Bonus:

  • ACAS or FCAS credentials, or equivalent fellowship in a recognized actuarial body.

Preference will be given to applicants who can work from the New York office, but remote work is acceptable for strong applicants based in the Eastern or Central time zones.

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary and annual bonus.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance, including spouse and family coverage.
  • 401(k) company match.
  • Life insurance.
  • Cell phone and internet reimbursement.
  • 25 days of paid time off per year.
  • Commuter benefit.
  • Gym membership via ClassPass.
  • IT equipment allowance.
  • Professional development and training.
  • Regular company gatherings and team events.
