The Role 💼

As our Controller, you'll be the architect and owner of AirGarage's accounting function. You'll lead the in-house accounting team, modernize systems and processes, and build the financial foundation required by a fast-scaling, capital-intensive business.

This builder's role includes converting the books to full accrual accounting, leading the migration from QuickBooks to a modern ERP, rebuilding the chart of accounts, tightening the close, and preparing for audits.

What You Will Do 📊

• Own the books end to end, including the monthly close, revenue recognition, reconciliations, AP/AR, payroll coordination, and financial statement integrity.
• Convert the company to true accrual accounting and implement GAAP revenue recognition for a transactional, multi-location, revenue-share business.
• Lead the ERP migration, including selection, implementation, data migration, integrations, and change management.
• Rebuild the chart of accounts for location-level, team-level, and corporate reporting.
• Connect accounting systems with operational systems, data infrastructure, and the data warehouse.
• Own indirect tax and compliance across multiple jurisdictions.
• Establish controls, documentation, and processes for financial statement audits.
• Manage, mentor, and develop the in-house accounting team.
• Partner with Operations, Sales, and Product on billing, collections, revenue sharing, and reporting.
• Deliver timely and accurate monthly financials and supporting schedules.

What You Need 🦚

• CPA or equivalent rigor with strong technical accounting knowledge, including GAAP and revenue recognition.
• Experience as the senior-most accounting owner at a venture-backed company during rapid growth.
• Experience leading a migration from QuickBooks to a modern ERP.
• Experience converting cash-basis or hybrid accounting to full accrual accounting.
• Experience preparing for and completing financial statement audits.
• Comfort working with data teams, data pipelines, system-of-record design, and process automation.
• A hands-on operating style, including personally resolving complex reconciliations.
• Experience with multi-location, multi-jurisdiction, revenue-share, or payments-heavy businesses.
• Strong accounting judgment, ownership, bias for action, and process-building ability.
• Strongly preferred: Big Four or top regional firm experience combined with startup operating experience, indirect or sales tax experience, payment processor and marketplace money movement experience, and familiarity with modern accounting tools and automation.

Why This Role May Not Be for You 🚨

The Controller owns the accuracy and integrity of the company's books. This is a demanding, hands-on role at a fast-growing startup with a lean Finance & Accounting team and occasional nights and weekends.

The role is not suited to candidates who want to inherit finished processes, avoid complexity, only direct instead of doing the work, wait for everything to be defined, or view the position solely as a stepping stone to CFO.

Important Note 🚨

AirGarage is remote-first, but team members should expect approximately six weeks of work travel per year for company offsites, supporting a location launch, and in-person onboarding. The rest of the year, employees may work remotely from anywhere in US time zones. Attendance at in-person events is expected.
